When Shields found out Lincoln was behind the insulting letters, he challenged him to a duel. According to the long-held customs of dueling code, Lincoln was allowed to choose the weapons. He chose swords. He had no intention of hurting Shields and thought that, with his long arms, he could stay far away from his opponent and remain unhurt himself. Both of the men and their seconds (assistants) took a coach to Alton for the duel. Just as they were about to begin, friends showed up and put a stop to the fight.
Lincoln turned again to the useful ax and earned his keep chopping trees, clearing land, and splitting rails. He nearly decided to become a blacksmith, then was delighted when he got a job as New Salem’s postmaster. This job allowed him to read all the newspapers delivered to New Salem and to chat with neighbors when they came to pick up their mail. If they didn’t come by, the young postmaster put their letters in his cap and delivered them. A new opportunity—the prospect of becoming a surveyor—sent Lincoln off to borrow more books.
