Weather has a powerful effect on the nutrient levels in Florida Bay and Everglades marshlands. During long dry periods, water runoff carrying nutrients and pesticides from dairy and sugar cane farms drains into the canals and wetlands – beginning at Lake Okeechobee then detouring hundreds of miles through residential areas, before reaching the Everglades wilderness areas.
