S. women won the CONCACAF Championship in New York. And in August of the same year Carla launched one of the most amazing endurance streaks in the annals of women's soccer. Beginning with a game against New Zealand, she started and finished 39 consecutive international games without leaving the field once for a rest. The incredible run spanned 3,482 minutes and 18 different opponents.

She was voted the top player in all of Southern California, and in her junior and senior seasons she was honored as a high school All-American. " Awards and honors were nice, but Julie had no idea how she would do against better players. She got her first hint when, just before her 17th birthday, she was among five teenagers selected to join the women's national team. The game at that level was much faster, but Julie held her own. She played one game and recorded an assist. Julie returned to Mission Viejo for her senior season and began sorting through the scholarship offers pouring in from around the country.
