However, given the diverse syntactic varieties of conditional statements attested in different languages, it proves difficult, if not impossible, to give a clear-cut definition which might encompass all the characteristics of conditional statements. To begin with, it is generally assumed that conditional statements may have either an overt or a covert marking of two clauses.
